A group of young people from UTAD recently took part in an enriching trip to Brussels as part of the programme “Douro and Trás-os-Montes – Diaspora and Development: Heritage and Horizons”, organised in partnership with the António Pargana Foundation, at the invitation of MEP Francisco Assis.
The initiative originated in November last year, during a module of the programme led by Francisco Assis at the iconic Casa de Mateus. At the end of his talk, the MEP challenged the young people to visit the European Parliament, highlighting it as a key venue for intercultural dialogue. Assis emphasised the importance of this institution as a meeting point for different cultures, languages and political perspectives, where consensus is built and cooperation between European peoples is promoted — values that are essential for the younger generations.
The trip to Brussels began with a day dedicated to exploring the city, giving the students their first taste of the European capital’s rich history and culture. The highlight of the day was the meeting with Francisco Assis at a traditional restaurant, where the young people had the opportunity to speak directly with the MEP, asking questions and sharing ideas in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
On the second day, the eagerly awaited guided tour of the European Parliament and the Parlamentarium, the institution’s interactive visitor centre, took place. This experience gave participants a deeper understanding of how European institutions work and the impact of political decisions on citizens’ daily lives.
For the students, this was a unique and unforgettable opportunity for direct contact with the heart of European democracy.
The António Pargana Foundation would like to express its gratitude for the special willingness and interest shown by Francisco Assis, highlighting his role in encouraging young people’s active participation and strengthening their involvement in civic and European education programmes.
